Toshiba cuts outlook after Q3 profit tumbles (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Toshiba Corp, Japan's biggest chip maker, booked a 72 percent fall in quarterly operating profit and cut its annual profit forecast as a strong yen and a weak global economy hit profits at the industrial electronics conglomerate.

Flooding in Thailand also hit quarterly earnings after it forced the company to halt some of its manufacturing lines.

Toshiba, the world's No.2 maker of flash memory chips behind Samsung Electronics and a supplier to Apple, cut its annual operating profit forecast to 200 billion yen from 300 billion yen for the year to March. That was below the 275 billion yen consensus estimate of 23 analysts polled by ThomsonReuters I/B/E/S.

The maker of electronic goods and equipment from rice cookers to nuclear reactors has been hurt by weak demand, especially for consumer goods such as computers and televisions, but has benefited from robust sales of tablet PCs and other devices using its flash memory.

Toshiba posted an operating profit of 10.5 billion yen for October-December, compared with a an average estimate for a 58.8 billion yen profit in a poll of four analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

On a net basis, Toshiba fell to a 10.6 billion yen loss in the quarter, from a 12.37 billion yen net profit a year earlier.

Shares in Toshiba, which competes with South Korea's Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor Inc in semiconductors and with GE and Areva in nuclear reactors, have fallen by one-third over the past 12 months, compared with a 14 percent drop in Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average.

Tuesday's results announcement came after the market close. Shares of Toshiba settled 1.8 percent lower, versus a 0.1 percent gain in the benchmark Nikkei 225, pressured by a report in the Nikkei business daily that the company would cut its outlook.

Rooney Mara Joins Soderbergh's Side Effects

rooney mara steven soderbergh side effects

Director Steven Soderbergh?s prescriptions drug-oriented dramatic thriller, Side Effects, seemingly hit a snag recently, on its way to beginning production. Megan Ellison (via her Annapurna Pictures) was previously said to have withdrawn her financial support for the project, due to concerns about actress Blake Lively serving as the film?s protagonist.

A new report indicates the situation with AP is indeed??a bit shaky,? but doesn?t clarify whether or not the backer is actually no longer involved with Side Effects. However, there?s reason to suspect the financier is still onboard, seeing how the film now has a new (confirmed) leading lady attached.

Lively has been replaced on Side Effects by Rooney Mara, who?s all the hotter a prospect (yes, in all meanings of the term) thanks to her landing an Oscar nod for her performance in David Fincher?s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Mara has recently been courted for a number of projects involving prestigious filmmaking talent, such as Kathryn Bigelow?s Osama Bin Laden thriller and Spike Lee?s Oldboy re-interpretation ? so, there?s little surprise about her decision to join the latest flick from a decorated auteur like Soderbergh.

Deadline has the scoop on Mara joining Side Effects, which the site also says fits in well with her schedule ? seeing how the actress is currently overseas promoting Dragon Tattoo. Despite the questions over funding, Side Effects remains?prepped to begin principal photography by April 2012, with Soderbergh working from a script penned by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) and produced by his go-to collaborator Greg Jacobs, along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, The Devil Inside).

The rest of the primary cast for Side Effects is not only (seemingly) set in stone at this point, but also composed of familiar faces from previous Soderbergh ?joints.? Returning to work alongside the filmmaker yet again are the likes of Oscar-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones (Traffic, Ocean?s Twelve), Jude Law (Contagion), and Channing Tatum (Haywire, the upcoming Magic Mike).

Steven Soderbergh retirement

Steven Soderbergh's next film will be 'Side Effects'

Side Effects revolves around Emily Hawkins (Mara), a prescription drug-addicted woman who is attempting to cope with severe anxiety and depression. Her condition is only heightened by the impending release of her husband (Tatum) from prison, as well as an affair she has been conducting with her psychiatrist (Law). Things begin to spiral even further out of control when Emily begins taking a new drug to deal with all the stress ? and eventually finds herself on trial for murder, having unknowingly (supposedly?) killed her newly-freed husband.

In someone else?s hands, those plot elements could lend themselves to a pretty low-grade and soapy thriller. However, with Soderbergh sitting at the helm and Burns handling screenwriting duties, expect Side Effects to be more of a thematically-rich and dark character study that avoids its B-movie trappings ? and boasts the director?s trademark visual flair, to boot.

Similarly, don?t be surprised if Mara delivers yet another dedicated and disturbing performance in Side Effects, following her great work in Dragon Tattoo ? along with her standout part in The Social Network and solid turn in the otherwise lackluster Nightmare on Elm Street remake. The rest of the cast should turn in top-notch work as well ? heck, even Tatum might be okay, in this one (hard as it may be to believe).

Soderbergh is known for working fast and efficiently, so Side Effects shouldn?t take too long to make its way into theaters. In fact, the film could possibly even be finished in time for an Oscar-qualifying run in late 2012 ? but don?t count on that being a certainty just?yet.

US women to do-or-die semis

Heather O'Reilly

By JOSEPH WHITE

updated 2:32 a.m. ET Jan. 25, 2012

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The U.S. women's soccer team was still on the field, having dispatched rival Mexico, when Abby Wambach gathered her teammates for a little speech.

The message: "We haven't done anything yet."

The Americans avenged one of their most shocking losses Tuesday night, and did so emphatically. A pair of early goals put to rest any notion of another upset by the neighbor to the south, and Carli Lloyd scored her first international hat trick in a 4-0 victory that clinched first place in the Americans' group and put them a major step closer to the London Olympics.

But hang on. Next up is the one game in this tournament that matters most, the London-or-bust semifinal against Costa Rica on Friday. The winner gets one of the two available berths for the Olympics; the loser stays home.

"The next game is the game that we need to be prepared for, and that matters the most," goalkeeper Hope Solo said. "She made sure that we didn't celebrate too much today."

Wambach and her teammates remember all too well the sting from a 2-1 defeat against Mexico in Cancun in a World Cup qualifier 14 months ago, the only time in 28 tries the Mexicans have beaten the Americans. That loss forced the U.S. into a backdoor playoff just to qualify for the World Cup ? and served as a wakeup call that the top-ranked team in the world can't take important games for granted any more.

"This was the exact same position that we were in, in Mexico in 2010," Wambach said. "We haven't done anything. We still have one game left. That's what I said ? stay focused.

"It's simple. I think everybody knows it. I think everybody understands it. But I also think that in hindsight we wish we had said something like that prior to that game. Because we didn't say those things, I didn't want to leave any stone unturned. And that's kind of what that speech was about."

The Americans will be heavily favored in the semis. Costa Rica is ranked No. 41 in the world and has never beaten the U.S., having been outscored 34-0 in seven meetings. Had the Americans lost to Mexico on Tuesday, they would have faced a much tougher semifinal against host Canada.

Instead, it will be Mexico vs. Canada in the other semi that will produce the tournament's second Olympic berth.

The lessons from Cancun have been prevalent during this entire CONCACAF tournament. The Americans routed their first two opponents ? Dominican Republic and Guatemala ? by scores of 14-0 and 13-0, the most lopsided results in U.S. team history.

Keeping with that theme, coach Pia Sundhage wanted a strong start against the Mexicans, and she got one. The Americans controlled the run of play early, and it paid off when Lloyd headed in the rebound in the seventh minute after Rachel Buehler clanged a shot off the post following a corner kick.

A minute later, the lead was doubled. Amy Rodriguez's cross was deflected by a defender and then by goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago straight to Heather O'Reilly for an easy goal.

Lloyd also netted in the 57th and 86th as the Americans avoided a repeat of a Mexican upset ? and wrapped up group play with three wins by a combined score of 31-0.

"It was redemption for us," Lloyd said. "We came out strong and knew we had to get it done."

The Mexicans, buoyed by a vocal and slightly pro-Mexico crowd of 7,599 at BC Place, worked hard on the counterattack for a goal, but the American back four of Buehler, Becky Sauerbrunn, Christie Rampone and Amy LePeilbet cleared nearly every serious threat, leaving goalkeeper Hope Solo without much work to earn her third shutout of the tournament.

That was probably for the best. Solo revealed after the game that she has "a little quad pull" that nearly caused her to ask for a sub. She hopes she'll be fine for the semifinals.

The defensive performance was especially heartening for the Americans given the absence of Ali Krieger, who tore two ligaments in her right knee against the Dominican Republic and likely won't be back in time for the Olympics. As a tribute to Krieger, each American player had the word "liebe" ? German for "love" ? written on her arm. Krieger, who has played five seasons in the German league for FFC Frankfurt, has a tattoo with the word on her left arm.

"Ali will be a part of this team ? whether she's here or not," Wambach said.

BlackBerry maker co-CEOs step down as co-CEOs (AP)

TORONTO ? The new chief executive of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said Monday drastic change is not needed after he assumed his new job following the departure of Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, who stepped down as co-CEOs and co-chairmen of the once-iconic, but now struggling company.

The RIM founders have been replaced by Thorsten Heins, a little known chief operating officer who joined RIM four years ago from Siemens AG.

The Canadian company turned the email smartphone into a ubiquitous device that many could not live without, but U.S. users have moved on to flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and various competing models that run Google's Android software. RIM has suffered a series of setbacks and has lost tens of billions in market value.

RIM's survival has been in question but Heins said he didn't think significant change was needed and said the moves were not "seismic" changes. He said he was committed to the vision and new software platform favored by Lazaridis and Balsillie, who announced Sunday they would step down from the top jobs but serve in other roles.

Heins said RIM has to improve its U.S. marketing in an effort go beyond the traditional corporate customer and attract consumers.

"In the U.S. we were very, very successful coming from the core enterprise business and in the public opinion this is still where we're skewed to," Helms said on a conference call on Monday. "We need to be more marketing-driven. We need to be more consumer oriented because this is where a lot of our growth is coming from. That is essential in the U.S."

Shares of RIM fell 3.9 percent, or 66 cents, to $16.34, after the conference call Monday morning after initially moving up almost 4 percent in premarket trading.

RIM said last month that new phones deemed critical to the company's future would be delayed until late this year. And its PlayBook tablet, RIM's answer to the Apple iPad, failed to gain consumer support, forcing the company to deeply discount it to move the devices off store shelves.

Many shareholders and analysts have said a change or sale of the company has been needed, but the sudden departure of the two founders from their top jobs wasn't expected despite their promises that they would examine the co-CEO and co-chairmen structure.

Balsillie and Lazaridis have long been celebrated as Canadian heroes, even appearing in the country's citizenship guide for new immigrants as models of success. They headed Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM together for the past two decades.

"There comes a time in the growth of every successful company when the founders recognize the need to pass the baton to new leadership. Jim and I went to the board and told them that we thought that time was now," Lazaridis said in a statement.

Lazaridis will take on a new role as vice chairman of RIM's board and chairman of the board's new innovation committee. Balsillie remains a member of the board.

The two remain two of RIM's biggest shareholders.

"I agree this is the right time to pass the baton to new leadership, and I have complete confidence in Thorsten, the management team and the company," Balsillie said in the statement. "I remain a significant shareholder and a director and, of course, they will have my full support."

Analysts have said RIM's future depends on its much-delayed new software platform as RIM has tried and failed to reinvigorate the BlackBerry. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said in late 2010 that RIM would have a hard time catching up to Apple because RIM has been forced to move beyond its area of strength and into unfamiliar territory of trying to become a software platform company.

Heins, 54, said Lazaridis and Balsillie took RIM in the right direction and said he's committed to the new software.

"We are more confident than ever that was the right path. It is Mike and Jim's continued unwillingness to sacrifice long-term value for short-term gain which has made RIM the great company that it is today. I share that philosophy and am very excited about the company's future," Heins said.

Barbara Stymiest, a former chief operating officer of the Royal Bank of Canada who has been a member of RIM's board since 2007, has named chair of the board of directors. RIM also announced that Prem Watsa, the chief executive of Fairfax Financial Holdings, is a new board member. Watsa has become a significant shareholder.

Lazaridis said he was so confident in the future direction of the company that he intends to purchase an additional $50 million of the company's shares on the open market.

RIM was worth more than $70 billion a few years ago but now has a market value of around 8.9 billion.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said that after missing the software transition caused by the iPhone, Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis put RIM's future in doubt.

The company still has 75 million active subscribers, but many analysts believe RIM will lose market share internationally as it has in the U.S. Market researcher NPD Group said RIM's market share of smartphones in the U.S. declined from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent in 2011.

Balsillie acknowledged in December that the last few quarters have been among the most challenging times in the company's history.

10 best resorts that get you close to animals

Atlantis / AP

Guests at the Atlantis hotel swim on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The resort features one of the largest outdoor marine habitats in the world, one that showcases more than 50,000 aquatic animals representing 250 species.

By Candyce H. Stapen, Family Vacation Critic

For animal-loving families, the highlight of any vacation is a close -- but fun -- encounter with a critter. At these 10 resorts, located in the U.S., Caribbean, Central America and Africa, families meet regional animals, learn about their behaviors and habitats and even, in some cases, interact with them.

1. Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas
This mega-resort on the Bahamas' Paradise Island is loosely themed on Atlantis, the lost city under the sea. As a result, water is everywhere, tying together the vast property with its many buildings housing over 3,400 guest accommodations. Along with multiple pools and man-made lagoons, Atlantis features one of the largest outdoor marine habitats in the world, one that showcases more than 50,000 aquatic animals representing 250 species. Walk through a shark tunnel and watch the fierce critters zig-zag above your head. Ogle tanks of jelly fish, lobsters and piranhas and be mesmerized by colorful schools of parrot, butterfly and other tropical fish. Watch nurse sharks in the Reef Lagoon, sea turtles in the Hibiscus Lagoon and Southern stingrays in the Stingray Lagoon.

Aquaventure features more water rides as well as the 14-acre Dolphin Cay where you learn about, touch and swim with dolphins. During the six-hour Trainer for a Day program, kids help train the curious critters and assist a laboratory technician at the Dolphin Cay veterinary hospital. The summer's Marine Adventure Fantasy Camp, held at select times, allows 'tweens and teens a multi-day experience of prepping food and feeding the animals, as well as taking a guided shark walk and snorkel trip.

2. Four Seasons Resort at Jackson Hole, Wyo.
The West's panoramic vistas of snow-capped mountain peaks set against blue skies define the legendary landscape of a Wyoming vacation. But that's just the background. To really explore the west, you need to view the region's animals, a special treat for city slicker families.

On a custom, four-hour wildlife safari led by a naturalist and offered year-round by the Four Seasons Resort at Jackson Hole, you ride in an SUV equipped with Swarovski spotting scopes and binoculars. As you traverse such area must-sees as the Grand Teton National Park, the Bridger Teton National Forest and the National Elk Refuge, your guide talks about the region's history and geology while everyone searches the fields, woods, mountainsides and rivers for bison, bears, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, bald eagles otters and trumpeter swans. Kids can use the items in the adventure pack they receive for the outing to collect animal skulls, claws and scat.

You might also spot wildlife while skiing and snowboarding in winter or hiking the parks in spring and summer. Located in Wyoming's Teton Mountains, the Four Season Resort at Jackson Hole offers upmarket accommodations in 106 guest rooms, 18 suites and 32 private residences.

3. Gunflint Lodge, Grand Marais, Minn.
Gunflint Lodge, situated lakefront in Minnesota's North Woods, lures families from mid-December to mid-March with dog sledding. Sit in the sled bundled in blankets as the willing team of huskies and Malamute mixes pulls you through a fairytale setting of frozen lakes and snowy trails edged by icicle-laced pine trees. During special dog mushing weekends -- January 12 to 16, February 8 to 12 and March 1 to 4, 2012 -- enjoy longer outings and hands-on time learning how to harness, handle and command the eager canines. Winter also brings naturalist-led wolf howlings: you howl in hopes the crafty critters howl back.

When not dog-sledding, try ice fishing as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Sprinkle the free corn kernels outside your cabin and in the early evening watch the deer that come to munch the treats. In summer, Gunflint morphs into a mecca for paddlers exploring the adjacent Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. As you glide across the lakes, keep a look-out for moose, beavers, otters and loons.

Gunflint Lodge offers 23 one- to four-bedroom cabins. With simple, but comfortable early American style beds and bureaus, and pine paneling and fireplaces, the accommodations exude a woodsy feel. However, don't confuse "simple" with "rustic." Most units come with full kitchens, washer/dryers, multiple bathrooms and saunas. Cook in or dine out at the lodge's two restaurants.

4. Half Moon Resort, Jamaica
The Half Moon Resort, one of Jamaica's long-time luxury leaders, sprawls on 400 acres that feature flower gardens, lush lawns, stables, tennis courts, a spa, an 18-hole golf course, scores of pools and two miles of beach. With so much land the resort hardly ever feels crowded. This is true for the property's dolphin encounters as well. One of the few Caribbean resorts to feature an onsite dolphin lagoon, Half Moon offers a dolphin experience for guests only. So instead of lining up with scores of cruise passengers crowding around a dock, you'll enjoy a small group or a personalized encounter. Little kids learn about the dolphins and touch their rubbery skin at a shallow water beach encounter. During a deep water or swim encounter, older kids, adults and families get more time to go nose to bottlenose with Reggae, the male dolphin, and Toni, the female. For even more time with these intelligent and friendly critters, 'tweens, teens and adults can serve as trainers for a day.

The AAA Four Diamond property joined the RockResorts collection in January 2011. With no high-rise buildings, the rooms spread out in clusters. Standard accommodation options include hotel rooms and one- to two-bedroom suites, or you can rent a five- to seven-bedroom villa.

5. Because & Beyond's Klein's Camp, Tanzania
A safari is the ultimate animal lover's dream. Watching a giraffe move languidly across a grassy plain, a herd of elephants munch tree branches, or a dazzle of zebra trot into the sunset are images you and your kids will remember forever. Because & Beyond's Klein's Camp is private. Rangers are allowed to drive off road and take guests out on night outings, two things that maximize your animal encounters. At night you can more easily spot certain animals such as leopards. At Klein's Camp, if the ranger sees a leopard slinking through the tall grass stalking an impala, he may drive the Land Cruiser off the dirt trail to follow her; the infrared lights on the vehicle allow the guests to track the leopard without disturbing her hunt.

Klein's Camp, comprised of a series of round buildings perched on a high ridge, affords a sweeping view of Tanzania's northeastern Serengeti. Often you can see giraffe, wildebeest and elephants from the main lounge or from a chair on your patio. Kids receive special packs with wildlife information, and the rangers show kids how the locals make fire by rubbing sticks together as well as how to identify an animal by his or her droppings and foot prints.

6. Tortuga Lodge, Costa Rica
Getting to Tortuga Lodge, accessible only by small plane or boat, is itself an adventure. Take the boat ride one way so you can enjoy the wind-in-your-hair feel of the waterways and spot monkeys, sloths and herons along the way. Tortuga Lodge, located on Costa Rica's northwest Caribbean coast, occupies 146 acres of land within the Tortuguero Conservation Area, a region of canals and slow-moving rivers that reaches to the sea and contains the 51,000-acre Tortuguero National Park. From the lodge's 26 rooms and penthouse suite, you often wake to the guttural calls of the howler monkeys scrambling in the branches overhead. On canal boat tours see turtles, lizards, river otters, toucans, parrots and other animals.

From July to October, you can go turtle-watching on Tortuguero Beach, part of the national park and an important nesting site for the endangered Atlantic green sea turtles. You will long remember the age-old ritual of a 300-pound Atlantic green sea turtle lumbering ashore, digging a nest, laying her eggs and then slowly returning to the water.

7. J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort, Oahu, Hawaii
Feed and find out about Hawaii's stingrays, sharks and other marine wildlife at the J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort during naturalist-led sessions in the property's onsite saltwater ponds and lagoons. At the Reef Shark Feeding, learn about lifecycles, habitats, and identifying factors of the day's star predators, such toothy critters as scalloped hammerhead sharks from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu; gray reef sharks from Molokini, Maui; or iridescent black-tip sharks from reefs near Pearl Harbor, Oahu. The Ray Experience gets you in the water with Hawaiian rays and spotted eagle rays, graceful swimmers that get close enough to brush up against your legs. During the Reef Safari, the guide leads you on a show-and-tell walk through one of the resort's shallow lagoons, letting you touch the "resident" sea cucumbers, sea stars, tiger cowry shells, strawberry crabs, sea hares and maybe even an octopus. The resort, located on the island of Oahu, also offers special versions of the shark feeding and reef safari for children ages 4-10.

An AAA Four Diamond property, the 315-room J. W. Marriott Ihilani Resort is part of the Ko Olina resort area located about 17-miles west of the Honolulu airport. The upscale resort features two pools, three restaurants, a spa and a golf course.

8. Occidental Grand Xcaret, Riviera Maya, Mexico
Scarlet macaws, flamingoes, white-tailed deer and parrots, are some of the animals that live at the Occidental Grand Xcaret, a 769-room, all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya. The animals make strolling the grounds fun, especially when a parrot greets you with a chirpy "Hola!" To see more Caribbean critters go to popular Xcaret, an eco-adventure park adjacent to the resort. The Occidental Grand has its own entrance to Xcaret and the hotel frequently offers discounted park admission.

At Xcaret, get close to sea turtles, meet tapirs, view bats in a cave, admire jaguars and pumas, see manatees and swim with dolphins or sharks, where you'll get an underwater view of a reef with Sea Trek or Snuba (neither of which requires diving certification).

With Xcaret next door, it's easy to come back to the hotel for an afternoon swim and then return to Xcaret for the evening demonstration of Pok-Ta-Pok, the ancient Mesoamerican ball game, and the entertaining folkloric show. For more luxury, book a room at the Occidental Grand Xcaret's Royal Club, which has a separate dining room with better food for dinner.

9. South Seas Island Resort, Captiva Island, Fla.
Discover Florida's sea creatures during a vacation at South Seas Island Resort, Captiva Island. On beach walks, especially along Sunset Beach and South Beach, known for the thousands of shells brought in with the waves, imagine the critters that once inhabited these shells while collecting your own beach souvenirs. On Captiva Island, several easy eco-adventure outings bring you close to wildlife. For more shelling and bird watching, cruise to nearby Cayo Costa Beach, a part of Florida's state park system. On a 90-minute boat cruise through Pine Island Sound, you're likely to spot dolphins arcing through the water "riding" the boat's waves.

Dedicated to marine conservation, the Sanibel Sea School, located at the South Seas Island Resort, offers a variety of hands-on workshops for children, teens, adults and families. The programs range in length of time from 30 minutes to all day. At the one-and-a-half-hour "Creature Feature," kids focus on one sea animal. Budding marine biologists ages 6 to 13, teens and adults can select from more than 30 courses focusing on fiddler crabs, frigate birds, fish, dolphins, mangroves, manatees and more. During the workshops, you'll spend most of the time in the field snorkeling, seining, canoeing and examining finds. Families can also opt for a private session on a topic of their choice. The 330-acre resort, which includes a wildlife refuge, offers a variety of accommodations from hotels to two- and three-bedroom condominiums and homes.

10. Robert's Beach Resort, Placencia, Belize
Reefs, rivers and rainforests abound in Belize, a haven for eco-adventures. Robert's Beach Resort, formerly the Inn at Robert's Grove, is situated in Placencia on Belize's southern peninsula. From there, day trips take you to Maya ruins, where you'll see rainforests as well as many of the spectacular reefs that are part of Belize's portion of the second longest barrier reef system in the world. The resort's top-rated PADI dive center arranges both scuba and snorkel outings. On a snorkel outing to Laughing Bird Cave, you'll float above schools of rainbow colored fish and get close to a big sea turtle who languidly surfaces nearby. For a special family getaway, stay overnight at Robert's Caye, the resort's one-acre island, where sea stars and tropical fish are steps away from your beachside hammock.

Robert's Beach Resort stretches on 22 acres from the sea to the lagoon, a large estuary of mangrove-lined channels and wide bays. On boat trips through the lagoon to Monkey River, known for its troop of howlers, you're likely to see egrets, dolphins and even a manatee. In Placencia, choose from hotel rooms as well as one- to three-bedroom units, a few of which have kitchenettes. Robert's Grove Beach Resort won Tripadvisor's Traveller's Choice Award in 2010 as well as Tripadvisor's Certificate of Excellence in 2011.

Ashley Robles Conquers Whitney, Awarded Golden Ticket [Video]

Ashley Robles took on arguably the most difficult challenge one can give oneself on last night's American Idol audition show:

She covered the Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston classic "I Will Always Love You."

But Robles rose to the occasion, belting out an impression version that granted the single mother access to Hollywood from all three judges, with Randy Jackson wondering where the heck Ashley has been all the time. Are we looking at a new frontrunner?

NOTE: Due to its late airing on the East Coast, this San Diego-based episode will be shown again tomorrow night on Fox, prior to President Obama's State of the Union Address. Tune in to watch such contenders as Aubree Dieckmeyer and Jane Carrey.

(AP) ? Records show the wife of Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant will keep their three California homes as part of the couple's divorce plans.

Orange County property records reviewed by the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/xUxzQv) show that the three mansions in Newport Coast, valued at $18.8 million total, were transferred into Vanessa Bryant's name since their divorce proceedings began in December.

Vanessa Bryant filed a divorce petition in Orange County Superior Court in December, citing "irreconcilable differences." The couple released a joint statement then saying that they had "resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately."

The Times says neither of the attorneys representing the couple was available for comment.

Sonnen vs. Bisping is for title shot, but Chael says Silva will never fight him

Dana White released his first video blog for the card on FX today. One interesting scene includes the UFC president dealing with the withdrawal of Mark Munoz from the UFC on Fox 2 card. White is getting ready to release news of the new Chael Sonnen-Michael Bising fight and says the winner will get a title shot against the currently sidelined UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

White must know something Sonnen doesn't because the outspoken contender sounds pretty sure he'll never face Silva.

"I'm not going to fight Anderson either way. They can say whatever they want. Anderson is never going to do that fight," Sonnen told "The MMA Insiders" show last week on Las Vegas' ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "I hope he's healthy and has a good life, but I'm not buying into this mythical world that Anderson is going to some day sign a contract to fight me."

During today's UFC on Fox 2 conference call, Sonnen reiterated his theory and said Silva turned down the fight to their boss' face.

"He even said no to (UFC executive) Lorenzo Fertitta's face. Face-to-face, not over the phone ? Lorenzo brought him out, sat him down, and said, 'This is the fight we want.' And Anderson said no," said Sonnen.

Sonnen knows management isn't pleased and questions the severity of Silva's back and shoulder injuries.

"They're not happy about it. The message to Anderson was this ' Chael is the opponent for you. You can fight him or you can't fight nobody. He elected to fight nobody,'" said Sonnen. "Dan Henderson said it perfectly, if the right opponent comes up, all of Anderson's injuries will go away."

Silva's next opponent will be known next Saturday night. A date and location is completely up in the air until Silva announces when he can officially return.

Janis Joplin would have turned 69 today

Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images file

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Janis Joplin would have turned 69 today. Jim Morrison would have just blown out 68 candles, and Jimi Hendrix would be staring down 70 come November.

Rolling Stone links to this photo of Joplin on their cover in August 1970. She looks as real as her lyrics. You wouldn't see a face this normal on Rolling Stone's cover today -- it seems a part of being a musician, at least a female one, is to be nipped and tucked and brushed and curled and made up till your album cover runs the risk of being confused with a fashion magazine.

Joplin wasn't like that, and it's one of the many reasons her talents and personality are so missed.

And also: It's one thing to write a birthday post about someone who's still with us (hello, Mary Tyler Moore and Betty White). But remembering someone who died so young is different. You can't help but wonder what their life would have brought had they lived.

Not just Joplin, Morrison and Hendrix, but John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, and so many others.

Where would their talents have brought them? Who would they have touched? What musical memories would we now be carrying in our hearts alongside the hits they had time to give us?

Here are a few of Joplin's hits.

Obama sings soul, briefly (AP)

NEW YORK ? President Barack Obama took a brief and unexpected turn as a soul singer at a New York fundraiser, crooning a bar from an Al Green classic and then joking that he hadn't been ushered offstage.

It happened at Manhattan's Apollo Theater late Thursday, when Obama stepped to the podium and veered from prepared remarks to thank Green for warming up the crowd.

Apparently not content with simply praising him, Obama suddenly launched into Green's "Let's Stay Together," starting with the vibrato "I" and pausing for enthusiastic applause before finishing up with the line "so in love with you."

Obama said his staff didn't believe he'd really do it.

Then he joked that the Sandman hadn't come out ? a reference to Sandman Sims, the tap dancer who chased unpopular acts offstage at the Apollo for decades.

Actor Wahlberg apologizes for 9/11 comments (AP)

NEW YORK ? Actor Mark Wahlberg has apologized for asserting that he would have stopped terrorists from flying an airliner into New York's World Trade Center on Sept. 11 if he had been on the plane.

The star of the film "Contraband" issued his apology Wednesday after comments he made to Men's Journal drew criticism.

He told an interviewer in the February issue that had he been on American Airlines Flight 11 with his children "it wouldn't have went down like it did." Terrorists flew the plane with 92 people aboard into the north tower on Sept. 11, 2001.

In his apology, Wahlberg said to speculate was "ridiculous to begin with." He said that to suggest he "would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible."

Evanescence Take Fans Inside 'My Heart Is Broken' Video

Clip doesn't premiere until Tuesday, but you can get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look right now!
By James Montgomery

Evanescence's Amy Lee in the video for "My Heart Is Broken"
Photo: Wind-Up Records

Last month, Evanescence invited MTV News to the set of their "My Heart Is Broken" video, where frontwoman Amy Lee told us about the dreamlike inspiration behind the clip (the 1988 British horror film "Paperhouse") and the nightmarish reasons she wrote the song in the first place: namely, the ongoing issue of sex trafficking.

"A lot of times when I write, I just sort of make up words, and something will stick, and I'll be like, 'Oh, that's from my subconscious. That's what I need to write the song about,' " she explained. "And that's sort of what happened [with the song]. I was like, 'I think I'm writing about this thing; it's on my heart,' just imagining being in such a trapped place and how that might feel, so the song was actually inspired by that idea."

So obviously, the video means an awful lot to Lee and her bandmates — which is why they chose to work with noted director and photographer Dean Karr, who filled the video with imagery that recalls both dreams and nightmares. And though the full "My Heart Is Broken" video doesn't premiere until Tuesday, Evanescence is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the clip's creation, with a making-of clip they sent exclusively to MTV News.

As you'll see — and hear — making "My Heart Is Broken" was a labor of love, for both the band and their director, one filled with fiber optics, elaborate costumes and, of course, striking, surreal imagery. But why don't you just have a look for yourself: Above, direct from Evanescence to you, is an exclusive look at the making of "My Heart Is Broken."

What are you expecting from the new Evanescence video? Let us know in the comments below!

Severed hand found near decapitated head in Hollywood (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Detectives investigating a decapitated human head found by hikers in the hills below the iconic Hollywood sign have discovered a severed hand in the same general area, Los Angeles police said on Wednesday.

The hand was uncovered during an exhaustive search of a seven-acre expanse of Griffith Park, where two female hikers who were walking dogs came across the head in a bag on Tuesday, Los Angeles Police Commander Andrew Smith said.

"We found a severed hand in proximity to the head," Smith said, adding the find came during a search conducted with the help of a cadaver dog supplied by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

The hand was discovered about 50 yards from the head in a popular recreation and tourist area not far from Griffith Observatory, Smith added. The search was continuing in the park in the heart of metropolitan Los Angeles that is home to a 53-mile network of trails, equestrian paths and fire roads.

"It's very early yet," Smith said. "We took a photo of the hand and we're going to transport it to the coroner's office for examination."

Police said the head, which Smith said appeared to belong to a man between the ages of 40 and 60, was discovered when two dogs the hikers were walking began playing with it. The women, realizing what it was, called park rangers.

Smith said the head appeared to belong to a person who was "possibly Caucasian, possibly Armenian."

Authorities believe the head had not been at the site for a long time, based in part on the fact that there were no animal bites on it.

The iconic Hollywood sign on Mount Lee above Los Angeles originally read "Hollywoodland" and was created to promote a housing development in 1923. The last few letters deteriorated in the late 1940s and the part that remained was restored in 1978.

U.S President Barack Obama wishes Betty White a happy 90th birthday in hilarious video

Obama Portrait American President Barack Obama has wished Golden Girl actress Betty White a happy birthday in a hilarious video sketch.

The U.S. premier delivered his well-wishes during the veteran TV star's ninetieth birthday celebrations, yesterday.

The star - who played Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls ? marked her ninth decade alongside friends such as Mary Tyler-Moore, with whom she once co-starred.

The previous night, American television channel NBC broadcast a special show in White's presence entitled A Tribute to America's Golden Girl.

The star-studded night saw a host of celebrities such as Ellen Degeneres and Tina Fey thank White for her contribution to the industry.

Loaded with gags, none were more rousing than Obama's.

Set inside the White House, the video sees him make a formal request to see White's birth certificate to prove her age. It later sees him frame a picture of her in his headquarters, before listeing to the theme from The Golden Girls ? Thank You For Being A Friend ? on an MP3 player.

Naturally, the sketch drew a huge reaction from attendees and viewers ? with White responding by smiling and blowing him a kiss.

Other stars who were present included Jay Leno, Morgan Freeman and Hugh Jackman.

Actress Amy Poehler said: "Betty, you're going to hear a lot of jokes tonight about your age. But take comfort in the fact that come tomorrow, you won't remember any of them."

Likewise, Carol Burnett joked: "Like many of you, I first heard about Betty from the wonderful stories told to me by my grandmother.

Actor Zachary Levi even proposed to her.

"I've been the luckiest old broad on two feet to have all the jobs that I've had," White joked.

Countdown to crash of Russia's failed Mars probe (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia's failed Mars probe Phobos-Grunt was expected to plummet back to Earth Sunday, sending space officials scrambling to predict where it would hit in the countdown to re-entry.

Space agency Roskosmos said debris from its doomed 14-ton spacecraft, which includes 11 tons of toxic rocket fuel, would likely fall to Earth between 1750 GMT and 1834 GMT, possibly in the Atlantic Ocean about midway between Brazil and West Africa.

Due to constant changes in the upper atmosphere, which is strongly influenced by solar activity, the exact time and place of the satellite's return is unknown.

Earler, Roscosmos said the site could be anywhere along an elliptical orbit over a broad swathe of the globe, from roughly as far north as London to the same latitude as the heel of Argentina.

Igor Marinin, editor of a space journal published by Roskosmos, earlier said he expected it to fall in the Atlantic Ocean some 1,200 km (750 miles) from Buenos Aires.

"In my view, it is most likely to fall in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, but the picture is constantly changing because the atmosphere is shifting and shaking so it is very difficult to predict an uncontrolled descent," he told Reuters.

Russia's Interfax news agency cited a Russian space industry source as saying it could fall on land, about 120 km (75 miles) west of the northern Argentinian city of Rosario.

Experts say the falling space junk poses little risk. The probe's aluminium fuel tank is expected to burn up high in the atmosphere.

"If anyone gets to see it, it will be a fabulous show. I don't think there has been an explosion of such a large volume of fuel in space history," Marinin, editor of the journal Novosti Kosmonavtiki, told Reuters.

The $165-million spacecraft, designed to retrieve soil samples from the Martian moon Phobos, was meant to be Russia's first successful interplanetary mission in over two decades.

But it became stuck in orbit after a botched launch on November 8, and has since been slowly losing altitude due to gravity's pull.

Some 20 to 30 small pieces of debris with a total weight of 200 kg (440 lbs) could hit Earth, Roskosmos said, adding that a tiny radioactive cargo of Cobalt-57 was too small to cause harm.

One component likely to survive re-entry is a small return capsule specifically designed to crash-land back on Earth in 2014, mission scientist Alexander Zakharov said.

"This is the capsule that was meant to bring back samples from Phobos, it's disappointing," Zakharov said. "We're hoping Roskosmos will approve a new craft to accomplish this mission."

Phobos-Grunt was one of five botched launches last year that marred celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering first human space flight and hurt Moscow's pride.

In an apparent attempt to deflect blame, Russia's space agency chief hinted last week that foreign sabotage might be the reason.

"I don't want to blame anyone, but there are very powerful means to interfere with spacecraft today whose use cannot be ruled out," Vladimir Popovkin told the daily Izvestia.

Stargazers worldwide are watching for reentry, including the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordinating Committee, an offshoot of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

Under a U.N. space convention, Russia could be liable to pay compensation for any harm caused by bits of falling spacecraft.

In 1981, the Soviet Union paid Canada $3 million for the cost of cleaning up radioactive debris scattered in the crash of a Soviet nuclear-powered reconnaissance satellite, Kosmos 954.

With most of the planet's surface covered by water, Russia's errant space probe is likely to splash into the ocean.

When NASA's defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell out of orbit in September, it showered debris into the Pacific Ocean. Germany's Rosat X-ray telescope re-entered a month later over the Bay of Bengal.

Samsung to merge Bada with Tizen: the OS party just got a little freaky

While everyone was watching Windows Phone parting the iOS / Android curtains, no one noticed Bada and Tizen making cheeky eyes at each other. It was rumored Samsung might open-source its featurephone OS, but according to Forbes, it'll now fuse it with the Intel-backed Tizen project. Once the nuptials are complete, it's reported Bada apps will play nice with Tizen -- including full backwards compatibility -- with developers getting a new integrated SDK and API. We're guessing then, that it's the Bada brand getting the chop when the two linux-based systems tie the knot. The spirit of MeeGo, of course, also lives on in Tizen making this one big concept cocktail. One we should see being poured into "at least one or two" Samsung handsets, and eventually other products, sometime this year -- failing any last-minute cold feet.

Samsung to merge Bada with Tizen: the OS party just got a little freaky originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 14 Jan 2012 14:13:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

U.N. genocide court moves first case home to Rwanda (Reuters)

KIGALI (Reuters) ? The Tanzania-based U.N. war crimes tribunal for Rwanda has handed over prosecution material for the first case to be heard in Rwanda, its prosecutor said on Monday, adding that genocide defendants can now get a fair trial in their own country.

Some see the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)'s action as a vote of confidence in the Rwandan judicial system nearly 18 years after the genocide. Others question the chances of a fair trial in the Central African country still scarred by the slaughter.

"With significant law reform, we've been able finally to convince the judges that the legal framework in this country adequately provides fair trial for any of the accused who is sent over to this country," ICTR prosecutor Hassan Bubacar Jallow told a news conference in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.

The ICTR, plagued by constantly rising costs and excessive bureaucracy, was supposed to conclude all work by the end of 2010, 16 years after it was set up. Its mandate was extended until 2014 to clear a backlog of trials.

The prosecutor said the case of Jean Uwinkindi, a pastor arrested in Uganda in 2010 and indicted for genocide and crimes against humanity, would be heard in Rwanda. Uwinkindi led a group of killers to look for and exterminate Tutsi, in particular Tutsi civilians from Kanzenze commune, the prosecution says.

Previous Rwandan attempts to have the court hand it some of the cases were unsuccessful. Rwanda's parliament scrapped the death penalty for genocide suspects in 2007, and has introduced a number of legal reforms required by the court.

"Our justice system has come of age," Rwanda's Prosecutor General Martin Ngoga said. "For us, this is more than just transferring one case."

"It is opening doors for many other cases to flow in. It is time to bring Rwandan cases home to Rwanda."

Highlighting the concerns about access to a fair trial in Rwanda another genocide suspect, Leon Mugesera, is currently fighting a deportation order in Canada.

The United Nations Committee Against Torture has requested that he not be deported until a group of ten experts has time to review the case.

Carina Tertsakian, a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the transfer of Uwinkindi's case risked setting a precedent as the ICTR moves to shut down.

"We don't believe that there are guarantees that Rwanda can provide a fair trial," said Tertsakian. "The government of Rwanda does have the ability to influence what goes on in the courts, especially on political or sensitive cases."

During the genocide, some 800,000 members of the minority Tutsi ethnic group and moderate Hutus were butchered in 100 days of killings.

NYC man admits forging art appraisal documents (AP)

NEW YORK ? A New York City man who unwittingly sold fake art prints he believed were by British artist Damien Hirst has pleaded guilty to forging appraisal documents.

Richard Silver bought the prints from an Irvine, Calif., man online in 2006 for about $40,000. He resold them for $84,000.

A defense lawyer said Friday that Silver didn't know the prints were fake until after he'd sold them.

The lawyer says Silver had some works appraised to get shipping insurance and altered the appraisal documents to match the rest of the prints so he could ship quickly. He says Silver didn't mean to defraud anybody.

Silver pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor forgery and false-filing charges. He also admitted not reporting profits on his state taxes. He's expected to be sentenced next week to 60 days in jail and ordered to pay restitution.

Researchers Develop Insect Powered Energy Source

cylonlover writes with this excerpt from an article at Gizmag: "Research into developing insect cyborgs for use as first responders or super stealthy spies has been going on for a while now. Most research has focused on using batteries, tiny solar cells, or piezoelectric generators to harvest kinetic energy from the movement of an insect's wings to power the electronics attached to the insects. Now a group of researchers at Case Western Reserve University have created a biofuel cell power supply that relies just on the insect's normal feeding [registration required to download full paper]."
