SCHOLASTIC BASKETBALL: Intensity carrying Spring-Ford girls

ROYERSFORD ? Ask veteran Spring-Ford girls basketball Jeff Rinehimer what has him the most pleased with the Rams? impressive start, and you?d figure to get several different answers.

It could be the Rams? uncanny depth in a rotation that goes double digits.

It could be the strong inside trio of Sarah Payonk, Mariah Traywick and Courtney Hinnant.

It could be the athletic backcourt spearheaded by Sammy Stipa, Brittany Moore, Sammy Haas, Jaida Burgess and Nikki Lynch.

It could be the bench effort of players such as Shelby Mueller, Haley Puckett, Maggie Locke and Kirsten Landis.

It could be a full-court attack that has seen the Rams score at least 70 points four times and surpass the 60-point mark in all but two games.

Or it could be a strong defensive effort that has held all but one league opponent (two-time defending champ Boyertown) to under 40 points.

Rinehimer, however, proudly points to a different barometer of his team?s success: the intensity chart.

The chart ? the brainchild of assistant coach Randy Doaty ? measures areas that include statistical realm and beyond.

?They get points for certain things,? Rineheimer explained. ?Baskets, deflections, tips, steals and rebounds. It?s our way of trying to measure intensity and trying to get the most out of every player.? Continued...

Through the first half of the season, the Rams (6-0, 9-2) certainly appear to have done that. They are outscoring their league opposition by an average score of 66.5 to 28.8, with their only two losses coming to Cheltenham (60-46 in their opener) and Notre Dame Academy (64-60) in the Spring-Ford Holiday Classic.

The 5-11 Payonk leads an ultra-balanced attack with a 9.8 scoring average. She had 17 points in a Spring-Ford Classic victory over Central Bucks South, and has also been a rebounding force while displaying a nifty perimeter game.

Stipa, a cat-quick 5-5 sophomore guard, is averaging 9.6 points per game. She scored a season-best 14 points in a win over Owen J. Roberts.

Traywick, a 6-foot center headed to Shippensburg, averages 8.6 points, highlighted by an 18-point effort against Notre Dame.

The 5-10 Hinnant is averaging 7.9 points; Moore (7.8 ppg) has a team-high 15 3-pointers; and the speedy Burgess (6.6) handles a lot of the ball-handling duties.

?I really like their overall effort in practice,? Rinehimer said. ?They come to work. I haven?t really had to coax effort out of them. It?s just been a joy to come to practice, and that?s translated over to the games.?

AROUND THE AREA

Daniel Boone earned a share of the Berks Conference Division 2 lead by defeating Fleetwood, 53-35, Friday, getting a career-best 14 points from Kiana Hurley. ... Spring-Ford and Boyertown will both participate in the Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic Saturday at Philadelphia University. The Rams face Mount St. Joseph at 2:15 p.m, while the Bears take on Rutgers Prep at 7 p.m.

HOT/NOT

Methacton and Boyertown each have five-game winning streaks. The Warriors got a season-high 18 points from Jenna Carroll in Saturday?s 60-38 victory over Phoenixville. ... Pottsgrove has lost eight straight since a 3-2 start, while Upper Perkiomen has lost 5-of-6 since a 2-2 start. Continued...

BOYS

SHOWDOWN LOOMING

The Pioneer Athletic Conference?s division leaders ? and remaining teams perfect in league play thus far ? will face off Thursday evening. Liberty Division leader Methacton will visit Pope John Paul II, the PAC-10?s defending champion and current Frontier Division kingpin, in a clash of 6-0 teams looking to establish undisputed supremacy on the circuit.

Both clubs come into the contest with modest winning streaks and overall records ranking with the area?s best. The Warriors (9-3) topped Upper Perkiomen and Phoenixville this past week while the Golden Panthers (10-2) handled Pottsgrove, Perkiomen Valley and Owen J. Roberts ? the game with the Falcons (9-3) going overtime before it was decided.

Playing a big game before a home crowd was the atmosphere for the PJP/Pottsgrove tilt. It was the kind of setting on which the Panthers thrived ? particularly Jamel Stinson, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds against a Pottsgrove unit whose 3-0 league record coming in matched PJP?s mark on the circuit.

?I like that,? Stinson said afterward. ?I like the noise and everything. I feed off the energy. I like when the crowd is noisy.

?We knew what we had to do to win ... play defense and make our shots when we needed to.?

Methacton?s record has been built on a combination of potent offense and stiff defense. The Warriors have outscored the opposition by a 59.5-42.2 margin in the games they?ve won, allowing only four teams to exceed the 50-point mark and three to hold them under 50 points ? all in the losses.

?We have guys who understand the game,? Methacton coach Jeff Derstine said. ?Our guys have been playing with a high level of energy. They do a pretty good job of keeping level heads when the other team makes plays.

?Our eight seniors have a lot of experience and that is certainly helpful. They keep their composure and that is a big part of it. They don?t let the last play affect them.? Continued...

ON THE MARK

He?s ranked among the top scorers in The Mercury?s coverage area since the beginning of? the 2011-12 season. But this past week, Elijah Jackson has made even bigger strides on the court with the Pottstown boys? squad.

Jackson had a big overall showing in the course of the Trojans? three-game swing, moving up in several offensive categories. With a combined 76 points in games against Upper Perkiomen, Boyertown and Perkiomen Valley, Jackson? boosted his per-game average to 19.5 ? second on the area chart, but highest among teams who?ve reported 10 or more games? results thus far. At the same time, Jackson is shooting a gaudy 83 percent from the foul line, making 53 of 64 free-throw attempts.

Jackson has also taken a commanding lead in the 3-point field goals category, upping his total to 33 after collecting 14 the past week. In addition, his career total is at 842 in his push to become the 10th member in the history of the Pottstown boys? program to reach the 1,000-point mark ? the first since Randy Purnell accomplished that feat in 2009.

Judge rejects plea agreement in fake cancer case | Richmond Times ...

A judge this morning rejected a plea agreement that would have resulted in no jail time for a Mechanicsville woman who investigators said faked a serious cancer condition to collect money.

After the ruling in the case of Martha Nicholas, defense and prosecution lawyers conferred and told the judge they had agreed to continue the case to Feb. 17.

Under the agreement that was rejected by General District Judge Robert Laney, Nicholas would have pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of obatining money by false pretenses and made restitution.

Nicholas, 42, had been under investigation for months after she appeared at cancer rallies and solicited money, sometimes wearing a "Cancer Sucks" T-shirt.? She collected under $2,000, according to evidence.

"Our investigation revealed no evidence of any cancer treatment at any medical facility that had been publicly identified by Martha Nicholas during her many public appearances and testimonials," police said after her arrest last month.
?
The investigation had started with an anonymous tip.
?
Sam Simpson, an attorney for Nicholas, said he is considering a defense that would include the argument that a mental impairment played a factor in Nicholas' actions.

Attorneys confirmed that there has been an interest in Nicholas appearing on national television relative to her condition, but that she has been advised against that while her case is pending.

Pakistan's Musharraf to return this month

Former President Pervez Musharraf announced Sunday he would return to Pakistan later this month and prepare for elections, something that could add to political turbulence in an already tense atmosphere in the country.

Musharraf's first challenge may be to avoid arrest on his arrival.

On Saturday, state prosecutors said they planned to detain the former army chief on charges he failed to provide security for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto ahead of her assassination in 2008. While much remains unpredictable, commentators have speculated that the army will not allow Musharraf to be arrested, setting up fresh conflict between it and the unpopular government of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Musharraf told several thousand supporters in Karachi by telephone on Sunday he would return between Jan. 27 and Jan. 30.

In apparent reference to the charges against him, he said: "I am coming to Pakistan, but there are attempts to scare me off. There are baseless cases against me, but we will face those cases in court."

Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup and stepped down in 2008. He has been living in London and Dubai since then, planning a comeback.

Legal troubles aside, few give him much chance of success.

Musharraf was widely disliked by the time he stepped down, and many of his supporters have since joined other parties.

But he has money, and his army connections still count for something, even if it is unclear whether the current military leadership will support him.

Elections are not scheduled until 2013, but there has been increasing speculation that Zardari may go to the polls this year.

Zardari is under pressure from the military over a memo sent to Washington seeking its help in stopping a supposed coup.

On Saturday, Zardari said he had no intention of stepping down over the memo scandal, as critics have called on him to do.

Merkel, Sarkozy to seek growth, jobs for euro zone (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? The German and French leaders meet on Monday to discuss ways to boost growth in euro zone states struggling to overcome the sovereign debt crisis and rising unemployment, and finalise a deal to increase fiscal coordination within the currency union.

They may also discuss a financial transaction tax, the "Tobin tax," being promoted by France but resisted by Britain unless adopted on a global scale, which could split the European Union at a summit at the end of the month.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicolas Sarkozy, aiming to align the two powerhouse partners that have driven European integration, will also focus on how to boost employment in the current era of austerity.

While Germany's labour market is thriving, employment is a pressing issue for Sarkozy, who faces an election in less than four months and is trailing in polls while French jobless claims are at their highest level in 12 years.

He may also try to accelerate plans for a tax on financial transactions, which he has set out as a priority ahead of the election, and which on Friday he vowed to implement in France even if EU partners like Germany are not on board.

Paris and Berlin want a "Tobin tax" to be applied across the EU, but Britain is resisting, fearing it will damage London, a global financial centre and mainstay of the British economy where much of the tax would be raised.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he would veto a European-wide financial transaction tax unless it was imposed globally, deepening the confrontation over the matter with both France and Germany.

German officials expect the EU summit to show satisfying results on stronger budgetary rules they have urged for countries using the euro.

The updated version of the EU's 'fiscal compact', which gives Brussels the right to take states to court if they violate the stricter rules, is nearing approval, relieving pressure on Merkel to take new initiatives at the summit.

"Reaching a functional agreement already by the next (EU) meeting on Thursday is not out of the question," Elmar Brok, a German member of the European parliament, told Reuters.

Hanging over the meeting will be Europe's sovereign debt crisis, and questions over what can be done in the near term to relieve pressure on states like Spain and Italy, which are due to pay back a mountain of maturing debt this year.

Both states face crucial bond auctions this week that will test investors' willingness to fund countries at a time when low growth, weak public finances and the threat of ratings downgrades risk driving borrowing costs to unsustainable levels.

Until now Germany has favoured a crisis-fighting proposal to boost funding for the International Monetary Fund so that it could open larger credit lines to troubled euro zone states if needed, in exchange for strict adjustments.

Italy, which requested IMF monitoring in November to calm market concerns over its reform measures, would prefer to avoid reliance on such a plan; its former economy minister has called IMF aid "the most serious risk for Italy."

Concern over Italy may have led the French and German leaders to strengthen ties with Prime Minister Mario Monti. He met Sarkozy in Paris last week, and will visit Merkel for talks on Wednesday.

The three meet again in Italy on January 20, before a January 23 EU finance ministers meeting and the January 30 EU summit.

EUGENE, Ore. - California men's basketball sopohomore G Allen Crabbe scored 23 second-half points on the way to a season-high 26 as the Golden Bears (13-4, 3-1 Pac-12) surged past Oregon (11-5, 2-2) to win, 77-60, on Sunday, Jan. 8, at Matthew Knight Arena.

Crabbe also grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the year; the third of his career. Cal went on a 13-0 run in the second half as Crabbe knocked down three of his six three-pointers, to pull away from the Ducks. It was the second time in his career that Crabbe had hit as many three-pointers, and the third time, this season, that he had at least five in one game.

Senior G Jorge Gutierrez scored 18 and sophomore G Justin Cobbs added 15 points for the Bears, who beat the Ducks for the eighth straight time to tie a series record. Cal also won eight straight games from 1919-37.

Crabbe's fire power keyed a 23-5 run, in the second half, that put Cal up, 55-38, with 8:55 to play. It was during that stretch that Crabbe scored 11 points with three three-pointers. He finished 9-for-16, from the floor, and 6-for-8 on three-pointers. His only first-half points came on a three-pointer that gave the Bears a 20-17 advantage. Cal led 30-27 at the break and pushed its record to 13-0 in games in which it has held the halftime lead.

In 17 minutes off the bench, sophomore F Richard Solomon scored six points and tied his career-high with 10 rebounds; seven on the offensive end of the court.

Devoe Joseph led Oregon with 14 points. E.J. Singler scored 12, and Olu Ashaolu had 10 points.

Cal will be back in action as hosts of the Pac-12's newest members, this weekend. The Bears will take on Colorado in an 8 p.m. PT game on Thursday (Jan. 12) and then face Utah in a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 14. For ticket information, please visit www.CalBears.com.
