Iron Man Recast? Robert Downey, Jr 'Would Really Hate' That

The actor tells MTV News he expects to play the superhero 'for a long while.'

With the Avengers finally assembling next week, Marvel Studios and the stars behind the heroes have already begun to look ahead to the next films set in the comic-book universe. At the closing night celebration of the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday night (April 28), Robert Downey, Jr. spoke with MTV News about the future of his character, Iron Man, and addressed recent talk about other actors playing the role in the future.

At CinemaCon last week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige mentioned to Badass Digest that when it came time for Downey to leave the role of Tony Stark behind, a new actor could pick up right where he left off, like in the James Bond films.

But Downey told MTV News on the red carpet that he wasn't so thrilled about the idea of someone else playing Tony Stark. "I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes," he said. An infamous jokester, he couldn't help but ask, "I wonder who's playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you're here to tell me?"

But Downey can't be Iron Man forever, and while the 42-year-old actor couldn't say for sure how many movies he has left in him, he made clear he'll be interested as long as they remain good films.

"I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while," Downey said. "As usual in my book, it's all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of reaction to. If they keep doing that, maybe I'll keep showing up."

In Downey's immediate Marvel future, there's next year's "Iron Man 3." The past few weeks have seen actors like Sir Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain potentially joining the cast, and Downey said that he could not wait to work with "any or all of them."

"It's funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion," Downey said. "'Iron Man 3' is really shaping up to be something special. We start in a couple weeks. I'm sure I'll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead."

What secrets, you ask? Well, it was recently announced that "Iron Man 3" would be co-produced in China. As for whether any filming would take place in the East, Downey was less forthcoming. "I'd like to tell you all my secrets," he said," but I forget them."

Predictably named iPavement puts hotspots into the sidewalk

We know what it's like to be in a foreign country without a mobile internet connection. Although there are domestic options making it easier to connect our devices abroad, Spanish company iPavement wants to help confused tourists (and their confused devices) by seamlessly integrating hotspots into tiles -- which are seamlessly integrated into the ground. It's unclear whether users will have open access to the entire world wide web, or only controlled info about the city, but the service is at least free to use. The 24kg (53lb) tiles are slightly larger than normal, installed a maximum of 20 meters (66 feet) from one another and only work at temperatures between 10 - 45 degrees Celsius (14 - 113 degrees Fahrenheit). Touristy cloud apps like maps, coupons, and traffic updates in various languages are also a part of the deal, and you would look like less of a tourist without that huge guide to Madrid. Just lose the fanny pack and you'll be set.

Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details

Well, well, talk about déjà vu! It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel NEX-F3 leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of Yang Canggih, which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but Sony Alpha Rumors has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the NEX-7 the badass standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny resemblance to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.

Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the A35 will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to Yang Canggih, it features the articulating display from last generation of NEX cams, Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the A57), four more effect modes than the a35 (up from 11) and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Barely 3 Months Post-Launch, Loyalty App Punchcard Is Live In 15M Locations, Nears Profitability

The mobile apps from stealthy loyalty startup Punchcard have only been on the market since February, but the company is now reporting it's close to being cash-flow positive. Like a digital version of paper punchcards which reward repeat customers for their business, Punchcard's app lets customers snap photos of their receipts in exchange for cash payouts or other rewards directly from the merchant. While not a new concept in and of itself, what's interesting about Punchcard is how it's been acquiring its business: it just switched on loyalty programs for millions of locations across the U.S., even if they didn't ask for it.

LG Optimus True HD LTE heading for more markets in Europe and Asia

LG has announced that it is taking the Optimus True HD LTE (nee the Optimus LTE) and its beautiful screen into more markets worldwide, specifically Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Known here in the U.S. as the LG Nitro HD, the 4.5-inch smartphone packs a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8MP camera, and of course the amazing True IPS HD 1280 x 720 display offers up quite an impressive package.

LG is also a major player in the LTE game. They hold the most LTE patents, held the first ever demonstration of LTE capabilities in 2007, and developed the first LTE modem in 2008. They're in for the long haul, and understand that high-speed data on-demand is the future of mobile. But according to Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, "LTE isn’t just about the network and that all LTE phones are not alike". 

With the Optimus True HD LTE LG is showcasing the phone as well as the network. Anndrew seemed to think they have something a little special here while reviewing the Nitro HD, so maybe they are right. No word on when to expect this one on the shelf, but LG tends to move quickly so keep an eye out.

Google Translate now serving over 200 million people per month

This may surprise you, but as Google keeps adding languages to its translation service's repertoire, the number of folks using it continues to increase accordingly. Google Translate's about to celebrate its 6th anniversary of machine translation, and now boasts over 200 million users each month -- with 92 percent of those folks coming from outside the US. Keep up the good work fellas, and as long as you expand Translate's beatboxing abilities, we're sure the online interpreter will be serving 300 million folks monthly in no time.

SketchUp Is Google?s First Divestment In Years, And It Made A Profit

Google's sale of a previously purchased arm of the company this morning, 3D modeling software SketchUp, to Trimble, isn't just something it does "every now and again". It's actually Google's first divestment ever, according to two sources, and we're hearing the search giant made a profit, as it sold SketchUp for more than it bought it for back in 2006. This could signal a sea change in how Larry Page executes his vision for a leaner, more focused Google. The company frequently shuts down extraneous products, but that requires redistribution of their team members internally. If it's now willing to sell them instead, Google could streamline around the theme of making user's lives more convenient, while making some money at the same time.
